Effect of Contention Window on the Performance of IEEE 802.11 WLANs

چکیده
In the IEEE 802.11, an exponential backoff has been adopted, which means whenever a collision occurs, the contention window (CW) of the station is doubled until it reaches the maximum value. The purpose of increasing CW is to reduce the collision probability by distributing the traffic into a larger time space. In this paper, we use a fixed contention window (FCW) scheme and then evaluate the performance of this scheme. Based on our analysis, we determine an optimal contention window (OCW). Furthermore, we apply the OCW scheme to 802.11e EDCF. The results show that the OCW scheme not only can effectively enhance the performance for high priority packets, but also can improve the overall system performance.

Achieving performance enhancement in IEEE 802.11 WLANs by using the DIDD backoff mechanism
Wireless local area networks (WLANs) based on the IEEE 802.11 standards have been widely implemented mainly because of their easy deployment and low cost. The IEEE 802.11 collision avoidance procedures utilize the binary exponential backoff (BEB) scheme that reduces the collision probability by doubling the contention window after a packet collision. In this paper, we propose an easy-to-impleme...
متن کاملError Bound of Collision Probability Estimation in Non-saturated IEEE 802.11 WLANs
We analytically prove that the error in the channel idle time-based collision probability estimation in face of non-saturated stations is bounded by 2/(CWmin+1) in the IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs (WLANs). This work explicitly quantifies the impact of non-saturation, and the result vindicates the use of the estimation technique in real-life IEEE 802.11 WLANs, in such applications as the acknowledg...

IEEE 802.11 is worldwide implemented and the most widely deployed protocol for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). This paper proposes a simple and effective contention window-resetting scheme, named Double Increment Double Decrement (DIDD), to improve the performance of IEEE 802.11 Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) under an error-prone environment. Our work becomes important and meaningful in...
متن کاملA Game Theory based Contention Window Adjustment for IEEE 802.11 under Heavy Load
The 802.11 families are considered as the most applicable standards for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) where nodes make access to the wireless media using random access techniques. In such networks, each node adjusts its contention window to the minimum size irrespective to the number of competing nodes. So in the case of large number of nodes, the network performance is reduced because o...
متن کاملDevelopment of Contention Window based MIDB algorithm for IEEE 802.11 based Wireless Networks
IEEE 802.11 is the most popular standard used in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). Several Markov chain models have been developed to evaluate and to enhance the performance of the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) protocol. However, the existing models cannot accurately predict the performance of the network. Also, the existing models suffer with high packet collisions re...
